Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (DOCCJ, USJP) The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, emerged from the visionary efforts of late Senior Professor Nandasena Ratnapala nearly three decades ago. Initially integrated within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Criminology was pioneered, laying the foundation for a multidisciplinary exploration of crime, justice, and societal well-being. Under the guidance of Professor Ratnapala, the department expanded its offerings to include postgraduate degrees and diplomas, catering to professionals in law enforcement, criminal justice administration, corrections, and related fields. This growth culminated in the establishment of a separate department in 2016, within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Today, the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice stands as a beacon of academic excellence, offering specialized undergraduate and postgraduate programs and Diplomas to meet the evolving needs of society. With an emphasis on research, education, and practical application, the department continues to shape the next generation of scholars, practitioners, and policymakers dedicated to the prevention and control of crime, thus contributing significantly to the enhancement of public safety and social cohesion in Sri Lanka and beyond.
